Russia's newest Lancet drones appear to have found a way to evade Ukrainian defenses. This means the warheads detonate some distance away, rather than on impact. AdvertisementAdvertisementAn advanced version of Russia's feared Lancet drone appears to have a new way to evade Ukrainian armored anti-tank grids and anti-drone nets. Russian forces posted a video of a Lancet drone striking a Ukrainian combat vehicle by exploding several feet away from the target. While the advancements will put some Ukrainian vehicles at risk, the best-protected vehicles should still be able to fend off the attacks, Forbes said.

The remarks were made by a Russian "Storm Z" soldier — the unofficial designation for units often made of formerly incarcerated fighters. But, it said, in reality they are staffed by Russia's worst soldiers — convicts and regular soldiers marked for punishment. The BBC also reported that the units are formed mostly of convict soldiers, or soldiers re-assigned there as a punishment.

So-called "torture pits" were dug at Russian military training grounds to punish troops, a report said. A former soldier told Important Stories and the Conflict Intelligence Team that misbehaving troops were put in pits for up to a week. The investigative report, published on Tuesday, cites ex-trainees at the Prudboy military training camp in the Volgograd Oblast and the Totsky military training ground in the Orenburg Oblast. The former soldier told IStories and CIT that one recruit died at the training ground after he was put in a pit. The report said that Sergei not only left the Prudboy training ground, but also the country.

"Storm fighters, they're just meat," said one regular soldier from army unit no. He said he didn't know why the commander gave the order, but claimed that it typified how Storm-Z fighters were considered of lesser value than ordinary troops by officers. Three of the five Storm-Z fighters interviewed by Reuters, and the relatives of three other Storm-Z fighters, described nightmarish engagements that saw much of their squads wiped out. At a televised meeting with a small group of regular Russian servicemen, he said he was aware that two of their comrades, former prison inmates, had been killed in action. Three Storm-Z fighters said they were offered wages of about 200,000 roubles ($2,000) per month, though said they had been paid roughly half that amount, on average.

Russian draftees killed in the war lasted an average four and a half months, per a new report. It used open source data on the deaths of 3,000 mobilized troops over the past year. AdvertisementAdvertisementConflict Intelligence Team analysts said the varying intensity of the fighting over different months heavily influenced the life expectancy of mobilized troops. Mobilized troops have repeatedly reported being sent to the front lines as cannon fodder or abandoned by their commanders. Almost 500,000 Ukrainian and Russian troops have been killed or wounded in the war, US officials said in August.

Russia said its Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Crimea was hit by a Ukrainian missile on Friday. Intelligence and experts have said it's part of Ukraine's counteroffensive, and the goal is to make Crimea "untenable" for Russia. On Friday, Russia's Ministry of Defense said on the social media platform Telegram the fleet's headquarters in Sevastopol was damaged by a Ukrainian missile. The hit is the latest in a recent series of blows to Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Photos obtained by the Conflict Intelligence Team — an open-source intelligence operation — and shared by OSINT platforms like Oryx, showed the Kilo-class sub, a formidable element of the Black Sea Fleet, with a large hole in along the waterline.

Ukraine's attack on the Sevastopol shipyard last week left a Russian submarine in rough shape. New photos leaked to social media indicate the submarine may be beyond repair, a naval expert says. The attack damaged two vessels, including the Kilo-class attack submarine Rostov-on-Don, and was the latest in a string of assaults on the peninsula, which Kyiv has vowed to liberate from Moscow. It also published satellite imagery showing the damaged Sevastopol shipyard, with a zoomed-in view of the submarine. Britain's defense ministry cited open-source evidence in suggesting that the Minsk had "almost certainly been functionally destroyed."

CNN —A Russian general who reportedly served as the top military commander for Ukraine last year has died, according to Russian state media. Army General Gennady Zhidko died at 58 “after a long illness” on Wednesday, according to the state news agency TASS. Zhidko served as Russia’s Eastern Military District Commander between May and October last year. He was reportedly the overall theater commander in Ukraine during Moscow’s offensive against Lysychansk and Severodonetsk in the summer of 2022. Russia’s Ministry of Defense named General Sergey Surovikin as its new overall commander for operations in the war on October 2022.

“This is the second train, there was one like it just before.”The video, seemingly filmed in late March, shows old Soviet tanks being transported, somewhere in Russia. Moscow has been known to bring out older military equipment from storage to help it prosecute the war in Ukraine, but these are different. The tanks are T-55s, a model first commissioned by the Soviet Union’s Red Army in 1948, shortly after the end of World War II. Soviet T-54/T-55 tanks form a threatening ring round the Parliament buildings in Hungary on November 12, 1956. T-55 tanks drive through the streets of Prague, capital of what was then Czechoslovakia, in 1968.
Russia appears to be dusting off its T-54 tanks, first deployed more than 70 years ago. Images from a monitoring group showed the tanks moving through Russia closer to Ukraine. While other old tanks have been used by Russia in Ukraine, none have been as old as the T-54, the group said. Ukraine claimed that Russia lost 21 tanks in a single day earlier this month. And, as Russia faces these struggles, Ukraine is expecting deliveries of modern tanks from Western allies, including Leopard-2 tanks from Europe, Britain's Challenger 2 tanks, and Abrams tanks from the US.

Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT)nokta
